Long Night Against Procrastination

Does the Library have my textbook?

At the beginning of the semester we have many students coming to the Library searching for textbooks and other curriculum materials. Here are few things for students and faculty to keep in mind about what the Library can and cannot offer:

  • The Library does not purchase and circulate textbooks in conjunction with course offerings. Certain textbooks may incidentally be in our collection, but this is fairly uncommon. If we do happen to have a textbook being used in a current class, there will most likely be only one circulating copy.
  • Textbooks can occasionally be available from two other sources: I-Share or ILLIAD Interlibrary Loan.
    • I-Share is a collection of university and college libraries in the state of Illinois that have agreed to share their books with each other. Many libraries in I-Share have restrictions on lending out textbooks so requests for them can be slow to fulfill or even be denied. For more about Requesting I-Share items found through WorldCat, click HERE.
    • ILLiad Interlibrary Loan is for books that are unavailable through I-Share. Interlibrary Loan is a system that allows students to borrow books from libraries all over the world. Because of this, requests for books in this system may take much longer and can be more difficult to request, as each library has its own lending policies. To learn more on requesting books from ILLiad Interlibrary Loan through WorldCat, click HERE.
  • If your teacher has informed you that curriculum materials are on course reserve, those items will be available for pickup from the circulation desk. More information on course reserve can be found here.
  • Reach out to your teaching faculty and let them know they can place items on course reserve at the library for limited use. If they are interested in submitting materials for course reserve they can visit Special Services for Faculty & Staff.

If you have any questions, please stop by the reference desk on the 1st floor or call us at 773-442-4410.

Welcome back students!

The Library would like to welcome all new and returning students to NEIU.  Here is some brief information to get you started using the library.

WorldCat Local
For 2014 the Library is debuting our new search tool WorldCat Local, which provides single-search access to articles, books, electronic resources and more. Our implementation of WorldCat Local is still in the beta stages of development. We invite our users to offer their feedback so that we may continue improving this tool.

Library Accounts
If you registered on or before December 20, 2013, your library account for borrowing and requesting library materials has been updated for the fall semester.

If you registered after August 16, you will need to stop by the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor of the Library with proof of fall registration from NEIUport to update your library account.  All accounts will be automatically updated after the final day of registration on January 20.

Please bring your NEIU ID with you to borrow library materials from the Library.  Your NEIU ID is also required to use the computers and software in the Multimedia Learning Resource Center (MLRC) on the 3rd floor.

Off-Campus Database Access, ILLiad and I-Share
Your NetID and Password which gives you access to NEIUport and Blackboardwill also give you access to the Library’s databases from off-campus and access to ILLiad Interlibrary Loan for requesting journal articles and library books from other libraries.

In addition to ILLiad, you can request library books from other academic libraries in Illinois through I-Share.  If you have not previously done so, you will need to create an I-Share account to request library materials from other I-Share academic libraries.  If you previously created an I-Share account it is automatically activated when your library account is updated.

Software in the Library
The Library has full MS Office available on the 2nd floor computers and in the MLRC on the 3rd floor.  Full Adobe Creative Suite and additional multimedia editing software are also available in the MLRC.

Printing and Photocopying
Printing and photocopying are available on most floors of the Library.  Color printing, photocopying and scanning are also available at the 2nd floor copy center.  Your print quota may be used at any printer or photocopier in the Library.

Questions?
As always, we are here to help with your research or any other questions you have about the Library.  Feel free to contact us at 773-442-4400 or online at http://library.neiu.edu/ask.html.

Good luck to all of you in the coming semester!

MLRC Study Room

From December 2nd to December 13th the MLRC will have a reservable study room for groups of 1-3 students. The room is located in the MLRC lab on the 3rd floor of the Library.

The room may be reserved up to one week in advance, and may be reserved for up to two hours.
The room is available when the MLRC is open:

  • Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
  • Friday, 8 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
  • Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
  • Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8:45 p.m.

To reserve the room, please call the MLRC at (773) 442-4560 OR e-mail MLRC@neiu.edu with the date and time you’d like to reserve the room, your full name, and how many people (1-3) will be in the room.

When the room is not in use, it is available on a first-come first-served basis.

Note: The room is only available to current NEIU students. Students with reservations have priority over walk-ins—students who use the room as walk-ins may be asked to leave when students arrive for their scheduled times. As with the rest of the MLRC lab, cell phone use and eating is prohibited.

Roaming Reference services now available

Stuck at your table but have a research question? Don’t want to lose your spot at a computer but need help printing? Look for Roaming Reference librarians this semester! Librarians are out from behind the Reference Desk looking to help you with any questions you may have. You can easily spot them with their yellow messenger bags and iPads for help anywhere in the library.
