NEIUport - Be Connected, Be Informed, Be Yourself
Do you want to have access to YOUR NEIU info and services at your fingertips? Over the summer months, NEIU began preparations for the launch of NEIUport, a university-wide internet portal. Portal, from the Latin word portale which means “city gate,” is the newest technology buzzword at Northeastern. An internet portal provides a way for people to access information and services that are targeted specifically for them.
“The main purpose of NEIUport will be to provide students with quick, centralized and secure access to the information, services and tools they need,” said Brad Baker, NEIUport project manager and dean of libraries and learning resources. “NEIUport will also provide faculty and staff with targeted information and services.”
The first stage of NEIUport, planned to go-live January 2007, will support and promote a better connected community through online student group activity, personal and event calendars, and announcements about student services and events. Access to information will be simplified with a centralized location for e-mail, Blackboard, and other services, each of which currently require separate logins. NEIUport will also include quick links to information targeted to a student’s degree, program, and other groups. Students will be able to customize the portal features to suit their individual needs and preferences.
Additional functionality will be added as the project proceeds over the next two years. The portal will develop in the future to include areas of interest for alumni, community members, and other guests of the university.
“Our goal is for NEIUport to be the primary electronic interface for interacting with the University and for the delivery of electronic services,” said Baker. “The NEIUport team will continue to keep the NEIU community involved as this project proceeds, and welcomes comments and questions on the project.”
Information about NEIUport will be posted in the coming months on the homepage of the NEIU Web site. If you have any questions or comments please contact Brad Baker at ext. 4466 or b-baker@neiu.edu.
