InfoLit: New Information Literacy Tutorial Teaches Students How to Select and Evaluate Information

November 20th, 2006   Filed Under Instruction, Spotlight

The Library provides access to a variety of materials in a variety of formats. The process of accessing and evaluating information is increasingly complex given the plethora of information available. As the introduction to the Information Literacy tutorial states: “Information is available from many sources and in many formats, such as printed text, television, videos, library databases, web sites, and more. To be ‘information literate’ you need to know why, when, and how to use all of these tools and how to think critically about the information they provide.”

The Information Literacy tutorial adapted by Michael Weinberg is now available online. It includes an explanation of the types of resources available, where to find them and how to select the best resources for research. A follow-up assessment/quiz is available to upload to Blackboard courses or to distribute in print format.

Annenberg Media Streaming Videos Now Available

November 20th, 2006   Filed Under Spotlight

annenberg-logo.jpg The Library has recently added 1481 streaming video programs produced by Annenberg Media to its collections. These programs, which can be viewed on demand, are designed to advance excellent teaching in disciplines taught in America’s K-12 schools by helping teachers increase their subject expertise and improve their teaching methods. Many programs are also suitable for students in the classroom and viewers at home. The distribution of these streaming video programs is funded by the Annenberg Foundation and made available for viewing from the Learner.org website (http://www.learner.org). Free registration is required for all first-time users.

Access to these video titles is now as easy as searching for any other material in the Library’s online catalog. Search the NEIU Library Catalog for specific titles or retrieve a list of all titles by setting the location limit to “Annenberg streaming videos” and searching the keyword “Annenberg” in the advanced search mode. The URL of the specific video will be displayed in the catalog record for directly linking to the video at the Learner.org site.
